Zack Swinak ran for three touchdowns Saturday afternoon, and Akeel Lynch spearheaded the Nittany Lions’ ground game with 123 rushing yards on 14 carries, leading Penn State (3-1) to a 34-0 home shutout victory over Kent State.
Freshman quarterback Christian Hackenberg found a third running back, Bill Belton, with a touchdown pass, and Sam Ficken kicked two field goals, including a 54-yarder.
Hackenberg completed just 13-of-35 passes (37.1%) for 176 yards, and was intercepted once, but the Penn State rushing attack netted 287 yards on the ground. Belton carried the ball 13 times for 90 yards, and Zwinak ran 15 times for 65 yards.
For Kent State, quarterbacks Colin Reardon and David Fisher combined to go just 17-for-36 for a combined 134 passing yards, and the ground game netted only 56 yards.
After an off-day next Saturday, Penn State will open Big Ten Conference play at Indiana on October 5.
