Tiger Woods took advantage of a meltdown by rival Sergio Garcia on Sunday to win The Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Woods closed the four-day event with a 2-under-par 70 on Sunday for a total score of 13-under-par 275 and his second win at Sawgrass.  Only Fred Couples, Davis Love III and Steve Elkington have also won two times there.  Woods’ previous victory came in 2001.

Garcia hit two shots into the water to take a triple-bogey 7 at the course’s signature par-3 number-17 island hole.  He then plunked his tee shot on 18 into the water, took double-bogey, and plummeted from a tie for first place into a tie for eighth.

Kevin Streelman, Jeff Maggert and David Lingmerth tied for second place at -11.  Ryan Palmer, Henrik Stenson and Martin Laird all closed at -10.

Woods won $1.71 million for his fourth victory of the calendar year.  With his 78th career win, he moved to within four of the PGA record long held by Sam Snead.
