One of eleven people taken to Butler County hospitals after a collision between a train and a passenger bus on Friday morning has died.
Officials have identified the dead woman as 91 year-old Claudette Miller. Nine other passengers, ages 26 to 92 were treated at hospitals after the crash in Evans City. The bus driver, 60 year-old Frank Schaffner, from Butler, was treated and released.
The investigation into the crash continues, but police had originally stated that Schaffner had, for some reason, stopped the bus on a railroad crossing while he was transporting passengers utilizing the Butler County Rural Transportation program in thick fog at about 8:00 AM Friday. By the time the engineer on an approaching freight train spotted the bus at the ungated crossing and hit the brakes, it was too late for the brakes to stop the train in time. The impact knocked the bus into a nearby ravine.
