June 5, 2014

Justin Williams scored 4:36 into overtime on Wednesday night to give the Los Angeles Kings a 3-2 home win over the New York Rangers in the opening game of the NHL’s Stanley Cup championship series.

The Rangers had taken a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Benoit Pouliot and (shorthanded) by Carl Hagelin.  But, Kyle Clifford put the Kings on the board with a score that came with 2:27 remaining in the initial frame, and Drew Doughty tied the game with 13:24 left in the second period.

Jonathan Quick stopped 25 of 27 shots to earn the win in goal for Los Angeles.  The Rangers’ Henrik Lundqvist made 40 saves, but took the loss.

Game two will be played Saturday night in Los Angeles.
