Authorities say the power outage that affected nearly 500 electric customers in Oil City’s West End on Thursday was caused by the crash of a vehicle whose driver had fallen asleep.

Oil City Police say a vehicle driven by 21 year-old Kevin Kumar, from Oil City, left West First Street around 9:40 AM and sheared off a utility pole.  The impact took three other poles and numerous power lines with it.

Power was restored to some customers within about 75 minutes, but many others had no electricity until late Thursday afternoon.  The 800-block of West First Street was closed until after 6:30 pm.

There was no word as to whether Kumar was injured.
