.158 hitter Tyler Moore and Danny Espinosa both homered on Sunday as the Washington Nationals completed a two-game-to-one win in a weekend series in Pittsburgh, beating the Pirates 6-2 at PNC Park.
Espinosa drove in three runs for Washington (17-15), helping give the win to starter Gio Gonzales (3-2). The Nationals outhit the Pirates 11-6.
Starling Marte homered for Pittsburgh (17-14), whose other run scored on a Russell Martin double. Pittsburgh starter Wandy Rodriguez (2-2) took the loss. Rodriguez worked six innings, and allowed three runs and six hits, striking out seven batters and walking only one. Moore’s three-run homer, his first of the season, broke open a 3-2 game, and was slammed off Pittsburgh reliever Bryan Morris in the top of the eighth inning.
On Saturday night, a ninth-inning hit batsman, a single, and a sacrifice fly by Moore provided the winning run in the top of the ninth inning in a 5-4 Washington victory. Wilson Ramos drove in a pair of runs for the Nats.
The Bucs outhit Washington 7-6, with the Marte and Clint Barmes both slamming two-run homers.
Pittsburgh reliever Tony Watson (1-1) took the loss.
The Pirates will take Monday off before hosting the Seattle Mariners in an interleague series scheduled to begin on Tuesday night. James McDonald (2-2; 5.76 ERA) is scheduled to start for Pittsburgh on Tuesday against Seattle’s Aaron Harang (1-3; 8.68).
