Vanderbilt (50-20) scored seven times in the third inning on Monday night and then held on for a 9-8 victory over Virginia in the first game of the best-of-3 College World Series baseball tournament played at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha.

The big inning gave the Commodores a 9-2 lead.  The Cavaliers (52-15) then scored three runs in the same inning, two more in the fifth frame and added a run in the eighth inning.  The potential tying run, though, did not materialize when Vanderbilt relief pitcher John Kilichowski snagged a line drive up the middle for the final out of the eighth inning.

In the big third inning for the Commodores, third baseman Tyler Campbell doubled twice.  Campbell has been replacing Xavier Turner, who was declared ineligible by the NCAA for a rules violation in a decision handed down last Friday.  Jared Miller (7-2) earned the win in a relief role.  Adam Ravanelle recorded the save.

The second game of the series will be played on Tuesday night.
