Connecticut routed Notre Dame 79-58 in Nashville on Tuesday night to capture their record ninth NCAA women’s college basketball championship.
With the victory, UConn duplicated their 2004 feat of winning both the men’s and women’s titles, and the Huskies women tied Baylor as the only teams to finish 40-0. Notre Dame closed at 37-1 following the only title game – men’s or women’s – between two undefeated teams.
Connecticut and their coach, Geno Auriemma, went into the championship contest tied with eight national titles with Tennessee and their legendary coach, Pat Summitt.
Breanna Stewart led UConn on Tuesday with 21 points, and Stefanie Dolson recorded 17 points and 16 rebounds.
Villa Maria graduate Kayla McBride, playing her final collegiate game, paced the Fighting Irish with 21 points.
