Eddie Johnson and Landon Donovan both scored second-half goals on Tuesday night, and the United States officially qualified for the 32-team 2014 World Cup soccer competition with a 2-0 victory over Mexico in a game played in Columbus, Ohio.

The U.S., now 5-2-1 in qualifying play, moved into first place in their pool with games remaining against Jamaica on October 11 in Kansas City, and at Panama on October 15.

It was the fourth consecutive World Cup qualifying tournament, dating back to 2001, in which the U.S. had posted a 2-0 win over Mexico.

World Cup play opens in June.
