Officials in Mercer County say three people have died in a two-vehicle crash that occurred late Friday afternoon on Interstate 79 between the Geneva/Cochranton and Sandy Lake/Greenville exits.

State Police say a southbound vehicle driven by 62 year-old Robert Neubert, from Amherst, New York, left the highway, traveled about the length of a football field through a median, and slammed into a vehicle headed in the opposite direction in the northbound lanes.  The other vehicle was knocked over a guardrail and ended up more than 60 feet from the berm of the highway.

Two women in the northbound vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.  They were identified as the driver, 54 year-old Susan Thomas, and a passenger, 44 year-old Mary Carmody, both from Sewickley in Allegheny County.

Neubert was pronounced dead at UPMC Horizon in Greenville.

Traffic was completely halted after the accident that occurred at about 5:45 PM, and normal traffic flow was not reported until well after 9:00 PM.
