Teen Struck And Killed By Car While Fishing, Companion Hospitalized In Grove City

August 12, 2013

In a bizarre tragedy in Mercer County, a teenager from Ohio died, and a woman who was with him was injured when a truck left a nearby highway and struck them at the farm pond where they were sitting.

Investigators say Austin Rife, from Dayton, Ohio, was pronounced dead at Grove City Medical Center early Friday morning, less than an hour after the incident.  37 year-old Stephani Rife, from Kettering, Ohio, was being treated for moderate injuries.

Police did not immediately release the identity of the truck driver, who they say is a New Castle woman.  The woman was reportedly headed south on Old Ash Road in Springfield Township at about 11:45 PM Thursday night, when her truck left the highway, traveled 240 feet through the farm, and hit the victims at the edge of the pond.

As the weekend began, the State Police at the Mercer station in Jackson Center were still investigating the strange circumstances surrounding the fatal incident, and evaluating what charges may be pressed against the driver.
