Strong winds that accompanied late afternoon thunderstorms on Wednesday resulted in damaged buildings, closed roads, downed power lines and electric outages.
The community of Emlenton was especially hard hit with several homes and at least one business having been damaged by downed trees. The director of the Venango County Emergency Management Agency was assessing the damage Thursday morning.
Several thousand people were without electricity by early Wednesday evening.
In surrounding areas, lightning strikes forced the evacuations of buildings at the Warren State Hospital in Warren County and at an assisted living center in Butler County.
An earlier lightning strike hit the stone tower of the Office of Emergency Services in Clarion County. C-93 Radio reported several chunks of brick and mortar, some the size of a basketball, landed along Fifth Avenue. Some minor equipment damage was reported in the emergency services offices. No injuries were reported.
