Steel Silhouettes Constructed To Show Drivers Size, Dangers Of Pennsylvania Elk

PennDOT officials are hoping that the sight of a pair of life-size elk silhouettes will impress on drivers the size of the majestic animals, and the dangers associated with their presence on area roadways.

The steel silhouettes were erected near Ridgway in aptly-named Elk County.

PennDOT says people often neglect to slow down around elk, possibly because they are not aware of the size of the animals.  An adult elk can weigh as much as 1,200 pounds.

Statistics show there have been 91 accidents involving elk in the past five years in Pennsylvania that resulted in either injuries or inoperable vehicles, or both.
