State Supreme Map Draws Up New Congressional District Map; Challenge Expected

February 20, 2018
By

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court issued its own Congressional district map on Monday, rejecting several proposals from both major political parties and the Wolf Administration.

The announcement by the Democratic-leaning high court immediately drew a promise from state GOP leaders that they will challenge in federal court.  Radio PA News reports they likely will argue that the court overstepped its bounds in ruling the state’s existing Congressional map unconstitutional.

The challenge could come as early as this week.

The new map attempts to balance and more evenly align Pennsylvania’s eighteen Congressional districts, thirteen of which have been won by Republicans in the past three elections.

Independent analysts says the new map will give Democrats a better opportunity to win more seats.  Republican spokesmen say it was drawn as a Democratic gerrymander – the same claim Democrats and the high court had lain on the Republicans.
