The state Senate has passed a bill that would allow many school districts the option of contracting for security posts with local municipal police officials, and would not limit the districts to dealing with the State Police.

The bill would give school districts in communities where police services are furnished solely by the State Police the option to contract with municipal police from nearby jurisdictions to provide security, in addition to the school resource officers in their own school facilities.

The bill, sponsored by state Senator Don White, representing Armstrong County and parts of Butler County, passed the chamber in a unanimous vote.

The measure moves on to the state House of Representatives.
