A bill introduced in the state Senate this week would put a halt, for now, on issuing permits for “fracking,” or the hydraulic fracturing method of drilling for natural gas.
Senator Jim Ferlo, from the 38th District, introduced the bill on Wednesday to establish a moratorium on the permits. Ferlo told Radio PA News his bill is spurred by carelessness, and by negative impacts on the environment and our quality of life.
It would not affect the approximately 14,000 permits that have already been issued.
Ferlo’s bill would also create a seven-person commission to analyze the agricultural, economic, environmental and social impacts of oil and gas drilling.
