Snow Is On The Way; PennDOT Urges Driving Safety

November 8, 2017
By

With snows possible this week, PennDOT officials have released their first cautions regarding winter driving.

Officials say sudden and heavy snow squalls are among the biggest challenges motorists face, and they include plow truck operators in that statement.  In addition to slick conditions, squalls can cause visibility problems and even whiteouts.

While assuring drivers that PennDOT  is ready for winter weather with their trucks and equipment, salt, anti-skid and other materials, officials also have listed a long list of cautions for driving in the snow.

Drive at a speed that suits the conditions, and slow down gradually.

Turn on your headlights.  Stay in your lane, and increase your following distance.  Be patient, and look ahead as far as possible.

Keep your windows and mirrors free of snow and ice, and make sure your wipers and defroster are working properly.

Do not pass a slow-moving vehicle or speed up to get away from a vehicle with a driver following you too closely.

Reduce in-vehicle distractions.

Do not stop in the flow of traffic, as this could cause a chain-reaction collision.

And, during a whiteout, come to a complete stop only when you can safely get as far off the road as possible or where there is a safe area to do so.
