A Sligo man was found not guilty of murder and manslaughter, but was convicted Friday on charges of aggravated assault and simple assault in the death of his father during a physical altercation in his father’s house last summer.

Following the verdicts in Clarion County Court, 55 year-old James Shimmons awaits sentencing, which will take place later this month.

Shimmons was tried in the death of 79 year-old Cloyd Shimmons who died during a fight at the older man’s home in Sligo in July, 2012.  James Shimmons claims he had acted in self-defense after having been attacked during a rant by his father over loud music and people having sex in his house.

Cloyd Shimmons died two days after the fight.  The cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma to the head.
