September 9, 2013

Serena Williams won the women’s singles championship at the U.S. Open for the fifth time on Sunday, defeating Victoria Azarenka 7-5, 6-7 (6), 6-1 in a battle of the tournament’s top two seeds.

Williams now has 17 Grand Slam singles titles, including four of the six in which she has competed.

Williams is 98-5 with 14 overall titles since she was ousted in the first round of last year’s French Open, and is 67-4 with nine tournament wins this calendar year.

On Monday, top-seed Novak Djokovic will meet #2 Rafael Nadal in the men’s singles championship at Flushing Meadow.
