Seat Belt Enforcement Drive Begins Monday

November 15, 2017
By

The Pennsylvania State Police and some 250 municipal police departments will join in an increased seat belt enforcement mobilization, beginning Monday, November 20.

In Venango County, the Oil City, Franklin and Sugarcreek Borough Police Departments will take part in the enforcement effort.  The enforcement will involve roadways which data show have low seat belt usage and high unbelted crash rates, and will continue through December 3.

PennDOT statistics show incidents involving unbelted drivers accounted for only 6.9 percent of the crashes reported in the state last year, but resulted in 52.2 percent of the year’s highway fatalities.

State officials say the combination of lap and shoulder seat belts, when used, reduces the risk of fatal injuries to front seat occupants of passenger cars by 45 percent and to occupants of light trucks by 60 percent.
