Schwartzel Wins Valspar Championship In a Playoff

March 14, 2016
By

Charl Schwartzel started making his move with a 65-foot birdie putt on the par-3 thirteenth hole on Sunday, tied Bill Haas through regulation play and two-putted for par on the first playoff hole to win the PGA Tour’s Valspar Championship at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort in Palm, Harbor, Florida.

Schwartzel won for the third time in his last six starts worldwide, and garnered his first victory in the United States since he won the Masters in 2011.  Both Schwartzel and Haas finished 72 holes at 7-under-par 277.  Schwartzel won $1.098 million.

Ryan Moore closed out in third place, two strokes back.

The fourth-place finisher was amateur Lee McCoy, a senior at the University of Georgia, who closed at 4-under-par 280 (74-71-66-69).  It was the best finish by an amateur since Robbie Shelton tied for third place in last year’s Barbasol Open, and the best in a PGA Tour-type event since Justin Rose tied for fourth place in the 1998 British Open at Royal Birkdale.
