Local lawmakers are warning residents about what they are terming a scam regarding a group that offers to file senior citizens’ Property Tax and Rent Rebate Program applications for a 39-dollar fee.
The state does not charge a fee. As a matter of fact, many Area Agency on Aging officials will help seniors file their forms at no cost.
Warnings issued by many state legislators’ offices say the contacts from those offering to file for a fee often come from someone identifying themselves as representatives of something called the Senior Advisory Center.
The state Department of Revenue isn’t really looking at the group’s offer as a scam, but asserts that payment for the service is not necessary.
More information on the state’s Property Tax and Rent Rebate Program can be found on the Department of Revenue’s website.
