State Police locally are warning residents to continually be on the alert for Internet scams.
The latest caution comes following an incident in Rockland in which a 61 year-old woman was taken in by an “offer” to buy an item she was attempting to sell online. The scammer sent the woman a check that was nearly $1,800 larger than the asking price of the item. The victim was asked to return the overage via a Western Union transfer.
The check the woman had received turned out to be fraudulent.
A release from the State Police at the Franklin station cautions that you never “conduct a business transaction which requires you to return a portion of money received to the sender or a third party.” The warning concludes by telling us these so-called “offers” always turn out to be scams.
