Ty Rex doubled in a pair of runs, and Dylan Cyphert struck out ten batters and threw a complete-game three-hitter, and the Cranberry Berries (14-2) advanced for the first time to the PIAA baseball quarterfinals with a 2-1 win over WPIAL champion California (20-1) in the first round of class “A” state tournament play on Monday afternoon at the Burkett Complex in Robinson Township.
The Berries will move on to face District 6 champion Bishop McCort on Thursday at a site and time to be announced sometime on Tuesday. Bishop McCort blanked District 10 champion Eisenhower 5-0 on Monday.
Rex finished the Cranberry game with two of the Berries’ six hits. Ron Baron drove home California’s lone run with a first-inning RBI single. Garitt Woodburn took the loss for the Trojans.
