Two Cochranton-area women facing trial in the murder of an Ohio woman went through a pretrial hearing in Crawford County Court on Thursday.

20 year-old Ashley Barber and 19 year-old Jade Olmstead are charged in the murder of 19 year-old Brandy Stevens. from Beaver Township, Ohio in May, 2012.  The victim’s body was found in a shallow grave near Barber’s family’s property in Wayne Township.  Investigators believe Stevens had been beaten and was still alive when she was buried.

All testimony in Thursday’s four-hour hearing came from police investigators involved in the case.  Defense attorneys, however, used the hearing to argue whether the women’s early statements to State Police, which allegedly included admissions of guilt, may be admissible in court.

Barber and Olmstead remain in the Crawford County Jail, and face a trial scheduled for November’s court docket.
