State officials are reminding pool owners that chlorinated wastewater must be handled responsibly.
The Department of Environmental Protection stresses that the discharge of swimming pool water into local waterways without a permit is a violation of the Clean Streams Law. This includes the discharge of the wastewater into a storm sewer, by which it can make its way to a stream or other waterway. The chlorinated water can kill or otherwise harm aquatic life.
Pool owners are reminded to correctly dispose of old water, and to neutralize wastewater containing chemicals such as chlorine and muriatic acid.
More information, and a list of Swimming Pool Wastewater Guidelines is available at the DEP’s website.
