The Pitt Panthers held off Duke’s Blue Demons in a 58-55 game whose final score sounded more like a basketball result, and earned their first football victory inside the Atlantic Coast Conference on Saturday.

Pitt quarterback Tom Savage tied an ACC record with six touchdown throws including two to freshman Tyler Boyd, from Clairton, two to Devin Street and one to freshman tight end Scott Orndoff.  Freshman running back James Conner, from Erie (McDowell), rushed for 173 yards and a touchdown.  Also for Pitt (2-1; 1-1 ACC), Anthony Gonzalez returned an interception 37 yards for a score, and Chris Blewitt kicked a 24-yard field goal.

Savage completed 23-of-33 passes (69.7%) for 424 yards, and finished with an amazing 237.6 quarterbacking rating.

Duke quarterback Brandon Connette completed 21-of-32 passes for 323 yards and four touchdowns, and ran for 101 yards and two scores, but threw four interceptions.

Next Saturday, Pitt will host Virginia in a 12:30 PM conference game.  The Panthers’ game broadcast will begin at 12:30 PM on ESPN Radio 1120.
