Surprised by an early 21-8 deficit, the Pitt Panthers (12-3 overall) could not complete a comeback attempt, losing 67-62 to Rutgers on Saturday morning, and falling to 0-2 in the Big East Conference in a game played in Piscataway, New Jersey.
The Panthers cut the lead to 55-53 with 3:24 left in the game, but could not take the lead.
J.J. Moore led Pitt with 14 points.
Eli Carter, who was taken out of the starting lineup for a team rules infraction, came off the bench to lead Rutgers (10-3; 1-1) with 23 points.
Pitt will next face Georgetown.
