The Pitt Panthers (24-9) were eliminated Thursday afternoon in the “round of 64” in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, shooting just 35 percent from the floor in a 73-55 loss to Wichita State at Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City.
Despite freshman Steven Adams’ second career double-double as he led the Panthers with 13 points and 11 rebounds, Pitt was knocked from the tourney in their first return to NCAA tournament play since they missed the event entirely last year. The Panthers made just one of 17 three-point shots.
Malcolm Armstead paced the Shockers (27-8) with 22 points, and Cleanthony Early added 21.
Wichita State will move on to meet the Gonzaga-Southern winner in a “round of 32” game to be played on Saturday.
