The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded a former number-one draft choice to the Baltimore Orioles for right-handed hitter Russ Canzler, who can play first or third base and the outfield.
Canzler played this season for the Orioles’ “AAA” affiliate in Norfolk, hitting 11 home runs and recording 49 RBIs in 86 games. A 27 year-old Hazleton native, Canzler has 96 Major League at-bats for Tampa Bay in 2011 and Cleveland last year.
Alderson was drafted number-one in 2007 by the San Francisco Giants, and was acquired by Pittsburgh in the Freddy Sanchez deal in 2009. This year, he had compiled a 2.43 earned run average in 29 relief appearances for the Pirates’ “AA” affiliate in Altoona and for “AAA” Indianapolis.
