The Pittsburgh Pirates (10-7-2) split their two Grapefruit League preseason baseball games over the weekend, losing 6-3 to a split squad of Tampa Bay Rays players in Bradenton, Florida on Saturday and blanking the Philadelphia Phillies 5-0 in Clearwater on Sunday.
The Pirates managed only six hits in the Saturday defeat. Edinson Volquez (0-2) took the loss, allowing four runs and five hits over three-and-a-third innings. Jerry Sands drove home two runs for the Rays.
Adam Wilk threw three innings of two-hit scoreless baseball as the Bucs’ starter on Sunday. Neil Walker slammed his first home run of the spring, and finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI’s. Andrew McCutchen and Travis Ishikawa both contributed two hits and an RBI. McCutchen is now hitting .560 (14-for-25) this spring.
