The Pittsburgh Pirates hit their game’s only three home runs on Thursday, but Pirates pitchers walked fifteen batters and allowed 14 base hits in a 16-6 loss to the Boston Red Sox in a Grapefruit League preseason game in Bradenton, Florida.
Felix Pie, Jared Goedert and Jordy Mercer all homered for Pittsburgh (2-3).
The Bucs’ Zach Foster walked five batters, and Jonathan Sanchez and Tony Watson allowed four walks apiece. The Red Sox were also helped by a hit batsman and two Pittsburgh errors.
The Pirates will send a split squad of players against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday afternoon and the rest of their roster against Boston on Friday night.
