Garrett Jones, Starling Marte and Neil Walker all drove in two runs on Tuesday night, and the Pittsburgh Pirates (3-5) posted their second consecutive victory, winning 6-5 over the Arizona Diamondbacks (5-3) in Phoenix.
Jones, who went 3-for-4, singled home runs in the first and fourth innings. In Pittsburgh’s five-run fourth frame, Marte doubled in two runs and Walker singled home a pair.
Marte recorded his fourth straight 2-hit game, raising his batting average to .312, and Travis Snider went 2-for-3.
Pirates starter James McDonald (1-1; 3.75 ERA) earned the win despite lasting only five innings. McDonald allowed four runs — all in the first inning, along with four hits, walked four batters and struck out five. Jason Grilli, the last of four Pittsburgh relievers, worked the ninth inning for his third save.
Miguel Montero drove in three of Arizona’s runs with a two-run double and an RBI single, and Jason Kubel slammed a two-run home run. D-Backs starter Brandon McCarthy (0-1; 7.71 ERA) took the loss, working 6-and-tw-thirds innings. McCarthy surrendered six runs (only 4 earned) and ten hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
The Pirates will try for a series sweep on Wednesday afternoon (3:40 PM EDT), sending Jonathan Sanchez (0-1) against Arizona.
