The Bucs’ four-run, game-tying seventh inning highlighted a comeback from an early 5-1 deficit.
New York’s Yangervis Solarte belted a homer off Pirates newcomer Edinson Volquez, and the Yankees’ Brian McCann and Ramon Flores added RBI singles.
6,870 people watched the game, setting a Pirates’ record for an exhibition season home opener.
On Thursday afternoon, the Pirates and the Yankees will meet again – this time in Tampa.
