Pirates’ 5-Game Preseason Winning Streak Snapped

The Pittsburgh Pirates (8-11) outhit the Philadelphia Phillies 9-7 in a game in Clearwater, Florida on Thursday afternoon, but saw their 5-game preseason winning streak end in a 2-1 loss to the Phillies (8-10).

The Phillies’ Pete Orr snapped a 1-1 tie with a game-winning solo home run off Pittsburgh southpaw Mike Zagurski in the bottom of the eighth inning.  Ryan Howard had driven in Philadelphia’s earlier run with a sacrifice fly.

Pittsburgh’s starter, Kyle McPherson, threw five scoreless innings of four-hit baseball.  Neil Walker went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The Bucs will play the Houston Astros in Kissimmee on Friday afternoon.
