The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association on Friday voted against a proposal to add a third District 10 “AAA” girls basketball team to this winter’s state basketball tournament.
Under the revised brackets for this year, D-10’s allocations for teams in girls “AAA” was reduced from three to two. Powerhouses Franklin, Mercyhurst Prep and Hickory are joined this year by multiple state “AA” champion Villa Maria, which climbed in classification in this year’s realignment. To further complicate matters, the merger of Conneaut Lake, Conneaut Valley and Linesville High Schools has given the district a 14th “AAA” team from the merger that makes up Conneaut High School.
PIAA executive director Bob Lombardi had proposed raising District 10’s representation back to three teams, and taking away one of the seven spots allotted to the WPIAL (District 7). In Friday’s vote. District 10 officials voted in favor of the proposal, and all other PIAA districts voted it down.
The state tournament bracket change did not affect “AAA” boys competition, where District 10 will still be represented by three teams.
