Pens Win Another Shootout Against Columbus

December 28, 2017
By

The Pittsburgh Penguins closed a three-game homestand on Wednesday night the same way they started it last Thursday – with a shootout win over Columbus.

After surviving a trio of two-goal deficits and a disallowed overtime score, the Pens (19-16-3) pulled out a 5-4 decision on shootout goals by Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby.

Malkin and Phil Kessel had brought the Penguins back with third-period power play goals, and Jake Guentzel tied the game at 4-4 with 1:40 remaining in regulation.  The contest was forced past the five-minute overtime frame after an apparent Crosby goal was disallowed when officials thought they spotted a goaltender interference on video replay.

Conor Sheary had also scored for Pittsburgh, and Matt Murray (14-10-1) earned the win with 29 saves.

Artemi Panarin scored twice for the Blue Jackets (22-13-3), and Sonny Milano and Boone Jenner added goals.  Sergei Bobrovsky made 33 saves in 37 opportunities, but took the loss.

The Penguins will play Friday night at Carolina.  The next Pens radio broadcast on 96.3 KQW will come Saturday night when Pittsburgh plays the Red Wings in Detroit.  Radio pregame airtime is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
