Pens Beat Islanders 4-3 In OT

December 8, 2017
By

Matt Hunwick’s goal about a minute-and-a-half into overtime on Thursday night lifted the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-3 home victory over the New York Islanders.

The victory propelled the Penguins (16-11-3) into a four-way tie for second place in the NHL’s Metropolitan Division, one point behind leader New Jersey, and came after Pittsburgh let slip away a 3-1 third-period lead.  The Islanders’ Brock Nelson had tied the contest at 3-3 with 1:10 remaining in regulation.

Jake Guentzel, Phil Kessel and Riley Sheahan also scored for the Penguins.  Rookie goaltender Tristan Jarry (5-1-2) stopped 23 of the 26 shots he faced.

Jordan Eberle and Mathew Burzal were the other goal-scorers for the Islanders (16-9-3) – another one of the teams in the division’s second-place logjam.  New York’s Jaroslav Halak (8-6-1) made 28 saves.

The Penguins will face the Toronto Maple Leafs (18-10-1) on Saturday night in the fourth of five consecutive home games.  The next Penguins radio broadcast on 96.3 KQW will air on Monday night at 6:30 PM when Pittsburgh hosts Colorado.
