The Pennsylvania Game Commission announced Tuesday that the total number of bears taken in the state in 2012 stood at 3,632, the third-highest total in state history.
Only the record total of 4,350 from the previous year and a harvest of 4,164 in 2005 were higher than the 2012 number.
The largest bear, with an actual live weight of 709 pounds, was taken by Joseph Spano, of East Stroudsburg, while hunting just before Thanksgiving in Monroe County.
62 bears were harvested in Venango County. Other regional numbers included 94 bears taken in Warren County, 77 in Clarion County, 56 in Forest County, 11 in Butler County and 6 in Crawford County. The numbers in Venango, Clarion and Butler Counties represented increases from the bear harvest numbers of 2011.
