With eight major statewide snow and ice storms already this winter, and an arctic cold snap that gave us the coldest temperatures in twenty years, PennDOT officials have been very busy since before Thanksgiving.

We are not yet halfway through winter, and PennDOT has passed the halfway mark of its seasonal budget for handling the snow and ice.

PennDOT spokeswoman Erin Waters-Trasatt told Radio PA News that salt and road treatment usage is running ahead of the agency’s five-year average, but that supplies remain ample.  She says, if we do see more snow and ice than the current budget can handle, the state would need to take money intended for spring maintenance activities to cover winter work.
