PennDOT Lauds Successful Continuation Of State’s Bridge Replacement Project

PennDOT reports that 390 of the total of 558 structurally-deficient bridges in the state have been replaced as part of a multi-year Rapid Bridge Replacement Project.

The project began in 2015, and PennDOT’s Rich Kirkpatrick says replacing the bridges alleviates major inconveniences.

In PennDOT’s District 1, here in northwestern Pennsylvania, officials say more than ninety road and bridge projects either were under construction or were bid out in 2017.  About forty of the jobs involved bridges.

Some of the biggest projects included the replacement of the Hunter Station Bridge near Tionesta in Forest County, and a major rehabilitation of the Interstate 79 bridges over Conneaut Swamp in Crawford County.

Improvements were made on stretches of three Interstate highways, including Interstate 80 in southern Venango County.

District 1 paved about 180 miles of highway in 2017.  About fifty miles of secondary roadways were resurfaced using recycled asphalt.
