For the ninth straight year, PennDOT has received a national honor for its support of the Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania, which includes Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Day.
The Keep America Beautiful and U.S. Department of Transportation Partner Award recognizes states for their support of litter cleanup programs.
Pennsylvania’s efforts in 2012 collected more than 6.7 million tons of litter from roadways, waterways, shorelines, parks, wetlands, railroad rights-of way, trails and school yards. In addition, since 1990, PennDOT’s Adopt-A-Highway Program has grown to cover more than 16,000 miles of state-maintained highways. The program currently boasts more than 7,000 participating groups which include over 130,000 volunteers.
