Sam Ficken missed an extra point kick and an overtime field goal attempt, and Penn State allowed a 99-yard kickoff return by Nebraska’s Kenny Bell as the Nittany Lions dropped a 23-30 overtime decision to the visiting Cornhuskers (8-3) on Saturday.

The loss means Penn State (6-5) must win at Wisconsin (9-2) on Saturday to ensure themselves a winning season.

Nebraska’s Pat Smith kicked a 42-yard field goal following Ficken’s overtime miss to win the football game.

Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg threw touchdown passes to Adam Breneman and Jesse James, and ran for a 7-yard score.  Hackenberg completed 16-of-33 passes for 217 yards and one interception, while teammate Zach Zwinak carried the ball 35 times for 149 yards and Allen Robinson caught eight passes for 106 yards.

In addition to Bell’s score and Smith’s three field goals, the Huskers scored on a 27-yard pass from Ron Kellogg to Quincy Enunwa.  Kellogg completed 20-of-34 throws for 191 yards.  Nebraska’s Ameer Abdullah ran the ball 25 times for 147 yards.
