On a muddy first Saturday in May, Orb, the 5-1 pre-race favorite, won the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby.
The bay colt started from the number-16 post, and was still 16th after a half-mile before taking the one-and-a-quarter mile event at Churchill Downs in Louisville in a time of 2:02.89. Orb won by about two-and-a-half lengths.
Orb paid out $12.80, $7.40 and $5.40. He was trained by Shug McGaughey, and was ridden by Joel Rosario.
34-1 shot Golden Soul finished second, and Revolutionary came in third.
