The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported Wednesday that only 2,200 Pennsylvanians completed the selection of an insurance plan during the first six weeks of sign-up opportunities under the new federal health care law.
Fewer than 27,000 completed registrations were reported through the system nationwide. Coverage takes effect January 1. Originally, we were told that registration must be completed by mid-March.
Numerous glitches in the website Healthcare.gov have created headaches for organizers and applicants alike, and have led to a Congressional hearing looking into the problems. Pennsylvania is one of 36 states relying on the federally-run online insurance shopping site. Experts say sign-up rates for those seeking insurance have been higher in the other states which are controlling their own registration programs.
