Older Driver Safety Awareness Week Is Observed

PennDOT reminds us we are in the middle of Older Driver Safety Awareness Week.

Statistics show that nineteen percent of Pennsylvania drivers are age 65 or older.  Last year, there were more than 18,000 crashes involving such drivers, resulting in 276 deaths.

PennDOT says one way drivers and their families may help lessen the chances of such crashes is to take advantage of classroom and online driver-improvement courses aimed specifically at older drivers.  A list of organizations offering the courses is available at JustDrivePA.com.  Find the “Older Driver” link under the “Traffic Safety Information” tab.  Insurance companies are required by Pennsylvania law to provide at least a five percent premium discount for policyholders 55 and older who successfully complete an approved driver-improvement course.

Also available on the “Older Driver” webpage are a list of warning signs that a driver may no longer have the capacity to operate a motor vehicle, safety tips and a publication entitled, “Talking With Older Drivers.”
