Just days after giving back a Region 5 victory over Bradford with a forfeit due to the use of an academically-ineligible player, the Oil City Oilers posted an important victory over another important region contender, dropping Warren on Friday night in a 41-28 win on Homecoming weekend at the Oil Field.
Utilizing both sophomore Jackson McFall and senior Trent Zdarko at quarterback, the Oilers (3-2; 2-1 in Region 5) threw for 224 yards and threw touchdowns. The Blue-and-White also ran for 257 yards and two scores, and the Oilers’ Alex Hargenrader recovered a fumble in the Dragons’ end zone for six points.
Jesse Rice, Logan Way and Frank Serbati were on the receiving ends of the TD passes, two thrown by McFall and one by Zdarko. Rice and Zdarko both scored on long TD runs.
Zdarko posted 121 rushing yards, and Kevin Daly carried the ball 22 times for 96 yards. Serbati caught four passes for 53 yards, while Way and Rice both recorded three receptions. Way is now five catches away from 100 career receptions, and Daly needs 218 yards on the ground to match Kevin Kresenke’s school career rushing record.
For Warren (4-1; 2-1), D.J. Fehlman threw for 251 yards, and lobbed two touchdown passes to Tanner Stanz and a third to Ryan Shattuck, but was intercepted three times. Kyle Kulka ran for 87 yards and a score.
Next Friday, Oil City will travel to Meadville for a Region 5 game against the Bulldogs (1-4; 0-2). Coverage on 96.3 KQW will begin at 6:00 PM.
Meanwhile, the Franklin Knights (1-4; 0-1) scored only once in a 62-7 home loss to the defending District 9 “AA” champions, Karns City (4-1). Kyle Ritchey and Kahlil West hooked up on a 68-yard pass play late in the second quarter. West’s three catches in the game totaled 103 yards.
Gremlins quarterback Tyler Kepple threw for 225 yards and five touchdowns, including four to Dakota Mohney and a fifth to Tristan Rhoades. Mohney, Zach Moore, Adam Whited and Kelsea Maverick scored on TD runs. Kepple added a 26-yard field goal.
Kepple completed 10-of-14 passes, and was intercepted once by Ritchey. Mohney caught seven passes for 146 yards. Rhoades rushed for 80 yards.
