With the approach of the Oil Heritage Festival in Oil City, the city’s police chief is stressing that there have been no changes in the Oil City “open container” law.
Chief Robert Wenner issued a statement last week reminding citizens that open containers of alcoholic beverages are banned on city and public properties.
The topic made top headlines around this time last summer when Wenner’s department announced they would be strictly enforcing the law at the Oil Heritage Festival softball tournament. The number of teams which entered the tournament and the total of fans attending the event both dropped dramatically.
After the fact, city government officials were asked many times if exceptions could be made for Oil City festivals, or if there were steps event organizers could take to prevent violations of the law. Despite the debate, Wenner says the open container law remains unaltered, and that police would continue strict enforcement of the statute.
