Damages will total in the hundreds of thousands of dollars in a fire that ripped through the top floor of a five-story building in the downtown business district in Franklin on Tuesday.

The fire was reported at about noon Tuesday at the Liberty Building on the 1200-block of Liberty Street.  Six fire companies responded, and many firefighters spent the entire afternoon and part of the early evening on the scene.

Initial indications have tracked the origin of the blaze to an area near a law office on the top story of the building.  The ground floor houses a phone store, a Subway Restaurant and other businesses.  The building is reportedly owned by a New York company.

All occupants of the building were evacuated safely.  No injuries were reported.

Power was disconnected to the Liberty Building and to several neighboring businesses and apartments.  Some made do without electricity for over eight hours.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
