A team from Massapequa, New York shook off a 7-4 loss earlier in the day to Manchester, New Jersey, and defeated the same squad 8-3 in the decisive game later in the day Thursday to capture the Eastern Region Junior League Baseball Tournament championship in Freehold Township, New Jersey.
New York had come through the winners’ bracket of the double-elimination tournament. Thus, New Jersey needed two wins to take the title.
DuBois, the Pennsylvania State and Pennsylvania Section 1 champions, placed third in the tournament, having lost 9-5 to New Jersey on Wednesday in the losers’ bracket final.
Massapequa, New York will now advance to the Junior League World Series which will begin on Sunday in Taylor, Michigan. The East champions will play their first game Monday morning at 11:00 AM against Lafayette, Louisiana.
